What rollback means
Driver rollback is a Windows recovery action that returns a device to a previously installed driver version when Windows has that prior driver available. In Device Manager, the Driver tab may offer a Roll Back Driver button after a driver has been updated. Its availability depends on the device and whether a previous version was retained.
In plain language, rollback is an undo option for a recent driver change, not a reset for every device problem. It is most relevant when a clear symptom begins soon after the driver was changed: for instance, an external display begins flickering immediately after a graphics-driver update. It is less persuasive when the device was already failing beforehand or when a cable, setting, or hardware fault is equally plausible.
For example, if a laptop’s touchpad stops responding after a newly installed manufacturer package, connect another input method before attempting recovery. If the Roll Back Driver option is available, it can restore the preceding driver. If it is unavailable or does not help, use the official support package and the system’s recovery options rather than repeatedly installing unrelated versions.
A common misunderstanding is that rollback removes all consequences of an update. It generally addresses the device driver; it does not reverse a firmware update, restore an unrelated Windows setting, repair damaged hardware, or guarantee that the former version is still appropriate. Before an update, record the old version, save the official package or support page, and consider how you will keep network access and input control if the affected device is essential.
