What firmware means
Firmware is software stored in nonvolatile memory on hardware, where it helps the device start and perform its built-in functions. A device driver, by contrast, is software installed in the operating system that allows Windows to communicate with that hardware. They can work together, but they are not the same update.
In everyday terms, firmware lives closer to the device; a driver lives on the computer. Firmware can govern a printer’s internal behavior, a dock’s controller, or a computer’s UEFI startup environment. A driver tells Windows how to use the device while the device is running. The same manufacturer download page may offer both, so read the package title and instructions carefully.
For example, a printer maker might release a Windows driver to add a printing option and separately release firmware to address behavior inside a specific printer model. Installing the driver will not update the printer firmware. Conversely, a firmware update is not a routine substitute for reinstalling a print driver when a local print queue is stuck.
A common misunderstanding is that firmware should be updated whenever a newer file exists. Firmware changes can be important when the manufacturer identifies a relevant issue, but they are model-specific and interruption can have serious consequences. Follow the manufacturer’s exact instructions for the exact model and power conditions. Do not use generic flashing steps or a file intended for a similar-looking product; first establish whether the symptom actually involves firmware.
