Before you begin
- Access to the Windows desktop or another administrator-approved account.
- A note or photo method for recording adapter names and driver details.
Important Cautions
- Do not select a driver solely from a similar-looking adapter name.
- On laptops, retain the exact computer model alongside the GPU name because the OEM package may be the appropriate choice.
- A yellow warning icon is evidence to investigate, not proof that a driver download will resolve the problem.
Use Device Manager to find the adapter Windows sees
In Windows 11, Device Manager is a direct starting point because it lists hardware categories and the driver associated with each device. Open it by right-clicking Start and choosing Device Manager, or search for “Device Manager.” Expand Display adapters. The names shown there are the graphics adapters that Windows currently enumerates; they are not necessarily the brand or model of the monitor.
A desktop may show one integrated adapter, one add-in adapter, or both. A laptop commonly lists integrated graphics and a discrete GPU. That is expected on designs that can use more than one graphics processor. Do not assume the first entry is the only relevant adapter or that the most prominent product name is the one connected to every display.
Record enough detail to make a package decision
Right-click a display-adapter entry, select Properties, then open the Driver tab. Record the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version. The General tab can show a device status message. These facts establish the current state; they do not themselves certify compatibility with a particular download.
For a stronger identifier, use the Details tab and select Hardware Ids from the Property list. Copy the values exactly rather than interpreting a partial string. Hardware identifiers are useful when the friendly name is generic or when official support asks for them. Keep them private when sharing screenshots publicly, because identifiers can reveal specific hardware configuration details.
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Write down every adapter name, including an integrated adapter if present.
- Open Properties > Driver for each candidate and record provider, date, and version.
- If the name is unclear, copy Properties > Details > Hardware Ids exactly.
What a useful result looks like
You should leave with the adapter names Windows recognizes and the current version for each one. Pair that record with the computer maker and exact PC model for a laptop or prebuilt desktop. A support site can then match the whole system, not only a chip name.
If Display adapters is missing, collapsed unexpectedly, or contains an unfamiliar generic entry, first select View > Show hidden devices and look for warning icons. A generic Microsoft display driver may be a temporary fallback after installation trouble, but it does not by itself identify the original GPU. Do not download a guessed package; use the PC manufacturer’s support information or ask its support channel to identify the configuration.
Keep GPU identification separate from display diagnosis
Settings > System > Display is useful for seeing active screens and choosing display options, but it is not a substitute for identifying the adapter package. Conversely, a correctly named GPU does not prove that a monitor, cable, or dock is working. Use the symptom and connection path to decide which question comes next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my monitor listed under Display adapters?
Usually no. Display adapters are GPUs. Monitors can appear in a separate Monitors category, while Settings shows which displays are active.
Why does Windows list Microsoft Basic Display Adapter?
Windows can use a basic display driver when the usual graphics driver is unavailable or not active. Confirm the PC model and use an official support source instead of guessing the original package.
