Before you begin
- Access to the Windows desktop
- The device connected or built into the PC
- A place to save the details or a screenshot
Important Cautions
- Do not publish or share a serial number unless the recipient is the manufacturer or trusted support channel that needs it.
- A yellow warning icon or an unfamiliar name is not proof that a download will repair the device.
Record the PC and the symptom first
A driver version without its hardware context is easy to misread. Start by noting the computer or accessory model, whether the device is internal or connected by USB, Bluetooth, network, or dock, and the behavior you are investigating. If a webcam works directly on the PC but not through a hub, write that down; it may be more important than the version number.
On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > About. Record the Windows edition, version, OS build, and System type. This tells a support page which Windows release and architecture you need to match. Windows 10 Home and Pro reached end of standard support on October 14, 2025, so do not assume a current Windows 11 download supports an existing Windows 10 installation.
Find the device in Device Manager
Open Start, type Device Manager, and select it. Expand the likely category: Network adapters, Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, Cameras, Printers, Human Interface Devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers are common places. A friendly name may be abbreviated, so use the physical connection and category as clues rather than assuming the first similar name is correct.
Open the item’s Properties. On the General tab, copy the Device status exactly, including any Code number. A status code is evidence from Windows, not a verdict that the newest driver is required. If the device is not where expected, use View > Show hidden devices only to gather more information; a faded item can represent hardware Windows is not presently using. Check cables, power, pairing, or the manufacturer’s connection instructions before treating absence as a driver problem.
- Open Device Manager and expand the category that fits the device.
- Open Properties for the candidate device and copy its name and Device status.
- Use the Driver tab to record Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
- Save a screenshot or notes with the PC model and Windows version.
Use identifiers to distinguish similar hardware
If the displayed name is too general, select the Details tab in Properties and choose Hardware Ids from the Property list. The values can distinguish closely related devices when the computer maker asks for them or when matching an official support package. Preserve the value as text instead of searching fragments on a random driver-download site. Hardware IDs help identify what Windows enumerated; they do not independently establish that a package is supported by the PC maker.
Check the Driver tab again after any official update and compare it with the baseline. Provider, date, and version can change in different ways, and a later date is not automatically better. Expected result: you can describe the device, Windows installation, installed driver, and observed issue to a manufacturer or administrator. If you cannot identify the device confidently, stop there and use the PC maker’s model support page or support channel rather than guessing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the driver version in Windows 11?
In Device Manager, open the device’s Properties and select the Driver tab. Record the provider and date alongside the version so the number has context.
What if Device Manager does not list the device?
Confirm power, cable, port, pairing, or network state first. If it is an internal device, use the exact PC model on the manufacturer’s support site or contact support instead of selecting a driver by category alone.
